The Rowland Unified School District Family Resource Center (FRC) opened its doors at Northam Elementary School in La Puente, California in 1996. The FRC was establised as a result of a Healthy Start Grant that originated in 1992. Set-up money was designated to establish the FRC and to maintain the Children's Clinic next door. The primary goal of the FRC at the time it opened was to provide access to health and dental services with a focus on wellness, preventive health care, and nutrition, providing alternatives to gang involvement and violence, improving communication between school and community and empowering parents. The Family Resource Center and the Children's Clinic have continued to work in partnership to provide seamless services and support to the families of RUSD. All work has been done in collaboration with numerous agencies such as Options Preschools/After School Care, Rowland Heights Library, La Puente Public Library, L.A. County sheriff Dept., Lion's Club Vision Care Program, Rotary, California Highway Patrol, PTA, Children's Bureau of Southern California, American Cancer Society, Red Cross, Costco, Rowland Recreation/Adult Education, Shoes that Fit Program, SSG Children's Dental Outreach, Santa Anita Family Services, Pacific Family Services, Tri-City Mental Health, Project Access, GEM, Almansor, Foothill Family Services, and Spirit Family Services. Additionally, we have continued to add and change services over the years in order to better service children and families. Our staff seeks to serve with dignity and compassion, understanding that in order for children to succeed in school that their basic needs must be meet.
